I grew up in a time when common decency was a given and expected of all of us.
Common decency, as it was taught to me, involved being polite, kind, honest, and respectful of others.
It’s kind of a win/win idea; if I’m respectful or kind or polite, chances are that’s what will come back to me.
It’s getting harder and harder to find that common decency.
People are vocal in their political statements; calling each other really ugly names, posting profane signs in front of schools, and refusing to listen to other people’s opinions.
Politicians in debates get into howling matches with each other.
Sex and sexual innuendo are in your face on TV and on billboards.
A particularly disgusting current local ad campaign features oozing language and sexuality.
I believe we can do better and expect better.
It’s a choice for each of us – not always easy to refrain from speaking or doing, but sometimes it’s the best choice.
I would like to live in greater harmony with those around me and encourage like-minded people to do the same.
Let’s counteract the madness of current negativity.
